South Africa has a suit of complementary legislation and national standards for the classification of waste, hazardous chemicals substances and dangerous goods.
The include but not limited to:
Waste Classification to HS SANS 10234,
Dangerous Good Classification (SANS 10228),
Safety Data Sheets (SANS 11014),
Chemicals Risk Assessment (GN 635),
Waste Disposal Classification (GN 636).
The aim of these pieces of legislation and standards is to set South Africa in line with international standards dealing with theclassification of waste, hazardous chemicals substances and dangerous goods.
A system called "Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS)", addresses classification of chemicals by types of hazard and proposes harmonized hazard communication elements, including labels and safety data sheets. It aims at ensuring that information on physical hazards and toxicity from chemicals be available in order to enhance the protection of human health and the environment during the handling, transport and use of these chemicals. The GHS also provides a basis for harmonization of rules and regulations on chemicals at national, regional and worldwide level, an important factor also for trade facilitation.
