Job Position: Project Hydrogeologist

Location: USK Office, Mogale City, Greater Johannesburg, South Africa

USK is actively seeking a project hydrogeologist to join our dedicated team at our Mogale City, Johannesburg office, South Africa. Responsibilities
The candidate will work within our hydrogeology unit, generally as part of larger interdisciplinary teams of mining, geochemistry, water management, and engineering groups. The candidate will perform a range of tasks, including fieldwork planning and implementation, drill supervision, hydrogeological/geotechnical monitoring instrumentation installation and operation, groundwater sampling, soil sampling, soil gas/vapor sampling, geochemical sampling, working with databases, aquifer testing, data analysis and interpretation, conceptual modeling, and reporting. Projects could include greenfield or brownfield, contaminated industrial sites, exploration sites, operational mines, mine tailings, and open pits. Other activities can include: the interpretation of field data and development of conceptual models, often coordinating with geochemists, structural geologists, and geotechnical engineers; development of inputs to water and load balance models; estimates of pit or underground inflows; remedial options analysis; contributing to engineering designs; and, interpreting data on constructed remediation systems. 
The successful candidate will interact closely with hydrogeology and other discipline team members from junior to principal levels and will have a role in managing field tasks and field technicians and junior staff to achieve project goals and timelines and prepare reports and presentations for internal or external audiences. There will be many opportunities to work with experts in various fields to learn and grow their consulting careers.  

Qualifications /Essential Requirements:
  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree (masters or post-baccalaureate work preferred) in geology, geological/civil engineering, or physical geography, with emphasis on geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental engineering, or geotechnical disciplines. 
  • At least five years of experience, preferably in one or more of the disciplines listed above. Mining industry experience is a benefit (operational, exploration, or assessment).  
  • Self-motivated and desire to work both as part of multi-disciplinary teams and independently.  
  • Strong writing and communication skills. 
  • Able to work on site independently with long hours in the field and variable weather conditions.  
  • Experience with installation and operation of groundwater instrumentation (pumps, transducers, piezometers, packers, loggers, etc).
  • Willing to travel locally, nationally and possibly internationally.  
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.  
  • Professional registration or eligibility to obtain it.  
Eligibility
This position is only open to South African Nationals or Permanent Residents. 

Remuneration Offer

An attractive compensation package. The estimated gross pay range for this position is ZAR 360,000 to ZAR400,000. The salary will be commensurate with relevant skills, knowledge, and experience.
